XIYI FOUND DAR IN THEIR CUSTOMARY SPOT in the med center, already stripped and laying naked on the table, his torso propped up on his elbows, his nose pointed at his handheld, his eyes scanning a book.

“Kali Choot Ke Safaid Jhaat!.” She whapped the handheld out from under his eyes, sending it clattering harmlessly against the far wall.

“What?”

“You said you were one of us.”

“One of what?”

“Normals. Neurotypicals...”

“I never said..”

“...and you’re a goddamned psychopath!”

“And? So?”

“You lied to me!”

“I did...”

“You liar. Make me trust you, twist me to...”

“Wait, hold on, kiddo. Settle down. First, I didn’t lie, I just didn’t volunteer the truth. Second, if I did lie...have you looked at the mission rationale for psychopaths? Have you read the profile? Lying and manipulation are part of the job. Third, I hang out with you because we have fun together, I don’t owe you a thing. And fourth, you’d better just get your ass used to listening to me and trusting my word since you’re on my team and what I say on that planet goes.”

Xiyi smoldered, then found he had given her an immense latitude, and calmed down. “I suppose, when we get there, I guess we will be have to professionals.”

“Exactly.”

“And we leave next week.”

“That’s the plan.”

“Fine.”

“We have an understanding, then?”

“In that case, I suppose...” She swung her bag and clocked him full on the side of the head.

He howled, and tried to curl around his damaged, bleeding cranium, and fell onto the floor.

Xiyi left him there for the mission gods to find. Maybe they’d get there before he bled into his brain.

But she kind of hoped they didn’t.
